The Chiesa Madre, dating back to Norman times, is the main church of Polizzi.
It contains the relics of San Gandolfo, the patron saint of the city, and a large number of works of art.

Originally built in the Arab-Norman style, later enlarged in the 14th century and lastly almost completely rebuilt in the 18th century.
The Chiesa Madre also holds treasures from churches that no longer exist.
Various triumphs of beauty from all eras are present, such as the Triptych of the Visitation by De Matta, the paintings by Giuseppe Salerno, the marble ark by Domenico Gagini and the silver urn containing the relics of the patron saint.
The marvellous Trittico Fiammingo by Rogier Van der Weyden of the 15th century depicting Mater Sapientiae (the Mother of Wisdom), one of the most beautiful triptychs in Europe and shrouded in legend, and the precious silver case of the Holy Sacramento of Nibilio Gagini, dating from 16th century, which represented Sicily along with 30 other works for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.
