The church is one of the oldest in the town and was built by the Normans. It also previously served as a hospital and San Gandolfo da Binasco, the patron saint of Polizzi Generosa, died there in 1260.
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND VISIT ROUTE IN BRIEF NOT TO BE MISSED
The church, together with the adjoining small hospital, was built in 1167 by order of Peter of Toulouse to succour and care for the sick Normans and Lombards (or Franks).
The single-nave church retains some mediaeval elements. Inside is a statue of the deceased patron saint and a painting of Madonna del Rifugio.
Part of the robe that covered another statue of the patron saint and from which the mothers of Polizzi used to cut a piece to give as protection to their sons going off to war in the 20th century.
