The church, formerly attached to the 'batiula' orphanage run by Tertiary Sisters of St Francis, now houses the Confraternity of S. Maria del Castello.
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND VISIT ROUTE IN BRIEF NOT TO BE MISSED
The year of its foundation is unknown, but the first records of the church date back to the 17th century.
The confraternity of S. Maria del Castello moved here in 1897, after the church of the same name became unusable and was closed. In 1786, the orphanage and nuns were transferred to the Collegio di Maria.
With a single nave, the church contains an 18th-century painting of the Madonna and Child and several ancient manuscripts containing prayers in the Sicilian language.
Two remarkable 16th-century many-coloured wooden sculptures from other churches, respectively San Rocco with gold decorations on his robe, from the Chiesa del Castello, and San Giovanni Battista from the no longer existing Church of the same name.
