The Church, also known as Badia Vecchia, was one of the richest and most sumptuous churches in the city and was one of the places where Sfoglio, Polizzi Generosa's typical sweet famous throughout the region, was born.

Built with a single nave and together with the monastery in the 15th century, when the Benedictine nuns moved within the walls, it has undergone various stylistic renovations, the most recent of which in the current neoclassical style characterised by precious gilded stuccoes and frescoed vaults.
The church features many valuable works by well-known artists of the time, including the statue of Santa Margherita by Domenico Gagini and the canvas of San Benedetto painted by Giuseppe Salerno.
The elegant and sinuous iron grille with floral motifs, in the upper choir, is among the most beautiful in Sicily, and a frescoed copy of Da Vinci's 'Last Supper' in a Sicilian version.
