The church, also known as the Badia Nuova, of the Benedictine Order, was built a few decades after its twin, the Badia Vecchia, due to a history of envy and jealousy between two noble families.
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND VISIT ROUTE IN BRIEF NOT TO BE MISSED
The church, with the attached monastery (no longer extant), was built in 1499.
With a single nave, it was completely rebuilt in the 18th century and today is one of the city's main attractions.
The church houses the largest sacred case in Sicily, made of gilded wood by the local craftsman Pietro Bencivinni in the 17th century in the majestic style of Spanish retablos.
In the background is the wonderful 18th century tiled floor with geometric patterns.
The statue of the Madonna Agonizzante dressed in a very elegant and precious mantle made by the Polizzi designer Domenico Dolce, of the famous D&G brand, and before him by his father, also a devoted tailor.
