The building, now the Municipal Auditorium with its fine concert hall, was originally the site of the Chiesa di San Francesco.
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND NOT TO BE MISSED
The former Chiesa di San Francesco, with its adjoining convent (now the Carabinieri barracks) and large roof garden, was built in the early 14th century by the Order of Friars Minor Conventual.
Currently with a single nave, the Franciscan Fathers had to abandon it after 1866. It was one of the richest and largest churches in the city until its roof collapsed in 1917.
Having relocated its precious works of art to other churches, it was restored and recently turned into an Auditorium.
The imposing building still retains part of its original late Gothic style with its large pointed arches and stone mouldings.
