This was the ancient parade ground - the site of the castle with its church of the same name, of which only the ruins and noble palaces built on its earlier foundations remain today.
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND VISIT ROUTE IN BRIEF NOT TO BE MISSED
Built in Byzantine times, it was further fortified in Norman times, a period in which the first real settlement within the walls developed.
Abandoned and disused in the 19th century, stone was stripped from it to restore the façades of several churches and other buildings.
The characteristic mediaeval cobbled stone square was also overlooked by the Castle Church, closed in 1897, where the entrance staircase and bell tower shrouded in vegetation can still be admired today.
Next to the remains of the church, inside Palazzo Notarbartolo, is the Madonita Environmental Museum (M.A.M). It contains a rich and unique collection of the extinct fauna of the Madonie Park.
