The church, property of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta as well as the richest Commandery in Sicily, had the task of protecting pilgrims and giving assistance to the sick.
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND NOT TO BE MISSED
Erected in the 15th century by the Knights Hospitallers, who moved here from their previous home dating back to 1177, the Commenda was built next to a pre-existing church in an isolated location overlooking the valley.
Its father establishment was the Priory of Messina and it possessed considerable wealth such as religious artefacts, houses, fiefdoms and a mill.
