On 19 March, the village of Polizzi Generosa comes alive and celebrates the figure of San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph), a moment of great spiritual, cultural and gastronomic significance for the community.
This feast, rooted in tradition and devotion, especially on the part of workers and fathers of families for whom the saint is the patron, attracts a great crowd of people in a religious and convivial context. MAIN EVENTS OF THE FESTIVAL
The feast is celebrated in the beautiful Chiesa di Maria SS. Assunta with a series of rituals and traditions rooted in centuries of history.
The solemn mass in the Chiesa Madre is followed by the blessing and distribution of bread to the faithful.
The procession of the splendid statue made by Quattrocchi and carried on the shoulders of the devotees of the Saint's Deputation along the streets of the village, accompanied by drummers and the brass band, creating an atmosphere of deep spirituality.
The 'tavulata' (table) of the Virgineddi, i.e. a nine-course banquet of typical products originally offered to the young poor and which nowadays involves the whole community, especially the young and the old, who eat bread with oranges, tagliatelle with badda beans from Polizzi and wild fennel, batter-fried cardoons and broccoli, and the classic Sfinge di San Giuseppe, a typical sweet flavoured with honey and cinnamon or with ricotta cheese.
