Polizzi Generosa is a village that preserves the magnificent and ancient art of ceramics, showcased not only in the majolica works of artist Giovanni D’Angelo but also in the stunning antique floors of its splendid churches, such as those in the Badia Vecchia, and the vibrant tiled halls of the PG 5 Cuori Foundation.
As you wander through the historic center, you will be surrounded by a multitude of vases lining the streets, proudly on display. It feels as though they guide you on a journey through panoramic views and historic monuments, enlivening every corner with colors and patterns that narrate the soul of the village.
1. The ceramics of the generous lands
The itinerary begins in the picturesque Piazza Matteotti, a panoramic spot that opens up views of the countryside surrounding Polizzi Generosa.
From here, continue along Via Giovanni Borgese, a path that runs beside the fields and offers stunning vistas. Along the way, you’ll encounter distinctive two-tone vases inspired by the Badda bean, a local Slow Food variety. These vases, representing fertility and agricultural roots, serve as a symbol of the region's heritage.
2. Majolica patterns and baroque splendor
Venturing into the upper, ancient part of the village, follow Via Ruilla to reach the Badia Nuova, also known as the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie.
Inside this sacred site, the 18th-century majolica-tiled floor, adorned with geometric patterns, creates a refined contrast with the unique artworks that decorate the church’s interior—one-of-a-kind treasures in Sicily.
3. Stairs of history and timeless faces
Continuing along Via dei Monasteri, descend to the Collegio Steps, where a spectacular staircase is framed by elegant historic buildings.
The staircase is adorned with a variety of majolica tiles that guide you to Via Garibaldi, Polizzi’s main thoroughfare. Here, admire the picturesque Salita Carpinello, decorated with distinctive vases depicting illustrious faces—figures of historical and global significance who were either born in or left a mark on Polizzi’s history.
4. The explosion of colors in Dolce&Gabbana style
Walking along Corso Garibaldi, you’ll reach the PG 5 Cuori Foundation, a space where the art of majolica is celebrated in all its glory.
Here, the halls, featuring brightly colored majolica floors, represent a triumph of Sicilian identity, a creation of Domenico Dolce, co-founder of the Dolce&Gabbana brand and a native of Polizzi.
Every detail pays homage to local culture, from the ceramics to the decorative motifs, creating an atmosphere that highlights Polizzi’s rich ceramic history.
5. The poetic speaking stairs
Conclude the journey in Piazza Santissima Trinità, where the view opens to the Madonie mountains and the lush valleys of the interior.
From here, head to Piazza Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, named after the famous writer from Polizzi whose life and works are deeply connected to this land.
As you walk along the staircases adorned with “speaking” majolica tiles featuring his words, you’ll experience yet another dimension of Polizzi’s ceramic artistry in a poetic finale that blends art and literature.
